Eastern IA Crop Update

2010 certainly has gotten off to a great start! In eastern Iowa, however, it is "tale of two cities:" south of I-80 I would guess that 90 percent of the corn and 5 percent of soybeans are planted, with 10 percent of the corn emerged. North of I-80, however, only 65 percent of corn is done as of the end of April.
The early planted corn is emerging very uniformly. While the good soil conditions have really helped, I have noticed producers that had their planter units checked and or redone seem to have an extra 2 to 3 percent better emergence. This comes from less skips, doubles, etc. As you check your fields, look at your stands. Remember that 2 to 3 percent better populations can equal $15/acre more profit.
Weed control is a must. Delaying weed control beyond a 4-inch weed height can result in corn yield loss of 7 to as much as 20 percent! Part of the the yield loss comes from loss of nitrogen. If weeds are 4 inches in height, you need 20# more nitrogen to get comparable yield.
