Stine's Fast Generation Breeding Program...Building Better Corn, Faster.
Stine Seed Company is continually pursuing innovative corn breeding methods to improve and speed up the development of new corn hybrids. New traits and technologies have added additional steps to the corn development process, climate and weather patterns in the U.S. Corn Belt still limit domestic production to one corn generation per year in a field environment. To overcome these obstacles, Stine and other companies have come to rely on "off-season" research in locations like Hawaii and South America to gain one additional generation each year. Stine, however, has advanced this concept even further through a process called Fast Generation Breeding.
Stine’s Fast Generation Breeding process is conducted at a research station located near the equator in South America. Largely due to a unique combination of environmental conditions, Stine has developed a process that allows us to "turn" a generation of corn every 90 days, even if the genetics involved normally mature in 120 plus days. That equates to four generations of corn each calendar year in a field environment.
This process enables Stine to rapidly increase parent seed stock for production of exciting new hybrids, giving Stine a competitive advantage in the marketplace. This also aids in the development of new trait conversions, whether they are new forms of insect and pest resistance or herbicide tolerance. Without Fast Generation Breeding, such conversions could take as long as seven years, but Stine researchers are now able to complete an inbred trait conversion in about four years.
Stine’s expert corn breeders and researchers are dedicated to providing growers with the best traits on the market. They continue to create new seed technologies and challenge production limits to increase their customers’ yields and profitability.
