Get More Out of Your Trade Show Visit

 

Trade show season is in full swing, which means growers will be elbow-to-elbow as they stroll through crowded venues with a dizzying array of vendors –– all competing for their attention. A little planning and strategy will help you make the most of your visit. Here’s some advice from Stine Regional Agronomist Todd Schomburg, along with Farm Progress Show National Events Manager Matt Jungmann and Iowa Power Farming Show Director Tom Junge.

Make a Plan

Visit the event website before the show to find participating vendors, show schedules and maps. “Then, make a checklist of what you’re interested in, print out maps and plot your day’s agenda,” says Jungmann.

Also, watch your mailbox, says Schomburg. “Many companies, like Stine, send special offers or promotions tied to the show.”

Timing is Everything

To avoid the biggest crowds, arrive half an hour after the doors open, or start later in the afternoon and stay until closing. Overall, mornings tend to be busier than afternoons, and the last day of the show usually has the lightest traffic and some of the best deals. “Occasionally, rather than ship product home, especially large pieces of equipment, companies may reduce prices on the last day to try and reduce show inventory,” says Jungmann.

Schedule Private Appointments

As trade shows become less social and increasingly business based, more companies are willing to schedule private appointments. This is a great way to make certain you get time with the vendors that interest you. Try calling the local rep listed on the company’s website, or send an email request via the contact section on the site.

Use the Information Booth

Take advantage of the show’s information booth. “We’re here to help, so don’t be afraid to ask where vendors are located if you can’t find them,” says Junge. He also suggests making one trip around the space, and then regrouping and going back for a second, more serious look.
