A Balancing Act
Nitrogen is a key nutrient in plant growth. It’s important for growers to monitor the nitrogen levels in their fields to maximize yields.
Nitrogen deficiency is commonly caused by cold and wet conditions, leaching due to heavy rainfall, dry mid-season conditions and standing water in warm temperatures. Sandy soil and residue can also affect the nitrogen level in your fields. V-shaped yellowing that begins at the tip of older leaves at the base of the plant and gradually spreads upward is a tell-tale sign of nitrogen deficiency in corn.
In preparation for spring planting, Stine Seed recommends that growers take soil samples from various plot locations to test nutrient and pH levels. If soil tests reveal a nitrogen deficiency, growers should consider applying nitrogen in two passes. Ideally, growers should apply the first treatment in early April before planting begins. Then, a side dressing can be applied in May in conjunction with your weed control products. Applying nitrogen after emergence allows the plant to absorb the nutrients when it needs them most and promotes environmental stewardship.
